At Vision Communication, all sign language courses provided are certificated and are conducted in accordance to Signature regulations and course specifications. British Sign Language Level 1

During this course you will work towards gaining your British Sign Language Level 1 qualification certified by Signature which will enable you to progress to obtaining further qualifications in this subject. Throughout your British Sign Language Level 1 course you will learn the basic foundation skills such as;

  • BSL alphabet
  • Numbers
  • Hand shapes
  • BSL order
  • Placement
  • Classifiers
  • Non Manual Features and Emotions
  • and much more

Once a solid foundation has been created, you will build upon this with various vocabulary covering many topics including friends and family, pets and animals, food and drink, hobbies and interests and much more. Completion of this course will provide you with an excellent basic level of conversational skills, both receptive and productive, providing you with the tools you need to have for effective communication within the Deaf community.

This course will consist of 3 examinations – BSL101, BSL102, BSL103

British Sign Language Level 2

During this course you will work towards gaining your BSL Level 2 qualification certified by Signature which will enable you to progress to obtaining further qualifications in this subject. Continuing from your basic understanding and ability studied in the BSL Level 1 course, you will improve upon the foundations looking further into:

  • BSL order
  • Numeration
  • Placement and Referring
  • Role shifts
  • Flow and Pace
  • and much more

You will continue to build on your vocabulary and work towards becoming fluent with regard to day to day conversations whilst learning how to give short presentations combining all aspects of BSL. Completion of this course will provide you with an excellent intermediate level of receptive and productive skills needed in having an effective communication level within the Deaf community.

This course will consist of 3 examinations – BSL201, BSL202, BSL203

British Sign Language Level 3

During this course you will work towards gaining your BSL Level 3 qualification certified by Signature which will enable you to progress to obtaining further qualifications in this subject. Combining all the skills gained from both the level 1 and level 2, you will now continue your studies by researching Deaf history, famous Deaf people, Deaf education and much more. After researching these many topics, you will create in depth presentations utilising new aspects of BSL such as;

  • Affirmation
  • Negation
  • Verbs
  • Linguistic understanding
  • Proforms
  • Compound signs
  • and much more

You will take part in many interactive learning experiences such as group conversations and debates, Q&A sessions with guest appearances from members of the Deaf community, various film, TV and internet based clips.

This course will consist of 3 examinations – BSL320, BSL321, BSL322

British Sign Language Level 4

The Level 4 Certificate in British Sign Language caters for the learning needs of those who already have competence in British Sign Language at Level 3 and are interested in developing their skills and knowledge. It is designed for those who work with, or want to work with, Deaf people (e.g. social workers, teachers of the Deaf, communicators, voluntary workers, workers within Deaf organisations, schools, etc.), and those who wish to expand their knowledge and skills in British Sign Language. Successful completion of this qualification can be used as evidence of the language skills needed, in order to be able to operate independently and at an advanced level in the target language.

This qualification uses the National Occupational Standards at Level 4. The assessment criteria for units BSL421 and BSL422 are taken from the UK Occupational Language Standards at Level 4 (‘extended’ language use). The qualification is at Level 4 on the Qualification & Credit Framework (RQF), Extended Level on the Language Ladder, and Level B2/C1 on the Common European Framework. Application of these standards has been applied to the units within the qualification.

NB The knowledge and understanding element of the National Occupational Standards (NOS) are not formally assessed. Assessment is through the assessment criteria. They do provide background information to help support the achievement of the assessment criteria detailed in each unit.

The standards can be used to:

  • Describe good practice, in particular areas of professional activity.
  • Inform job descriptions and personal specifications.
  • Design training courses and continuous professional development.
  • Assess the skills of those who are qualified, e.g. for recruitment or appraisal purposes. Offer a framework for quality assurance.

This course will consist of 4 examinations – BSL420, BSL421, BSL422, BSL423
